Why Choose a Military School?

Understanding the Decision for This Type of Schooling

Military schools come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, just like traditional schools. But, they all have one thing in common...the basics for discipline and academics.

The mention of military school conjures many thoughts that can be quite different among people. Some think of a harsh school environment where kids are not respected. Some think of a strict environment that whips bad kids back in shape. What do you think of when you hear the words "military school," and what is your reaction? This article tells why parents might choose a military school over other more traditional schools.

Reasons to Send Kids to Military School

Parents may choose to send their children to military schools for different reasons.

  • For some parents it is a time honored tradition, which they believe will give their children a good head start in life.

  • For other parents who are struggling to find solutions to their children’s behavior problems, it is the hope that a structured school environment will help them to win the battle to teach their child social and moral responsibility.

  • Still other parents consider military schools an option for their children’s education, and hope that such a school will and give their children an advantage over public schooled children, when it comes time for applying for college.

  • There are also those parents who send their children to military school because they want them to learn the life skills taught on such a campus, including discipline, responsibility, respect for authority, self control, and structured, orderly living.

Family Tradition

For those families who have a number of military academy graduates in their family tree, it may already be decided before children reach school age, that they will attend a military school. These parents believe that they received a good education, and a good start in life by attending this type of school, and generally want the same thing for their own children.

Behavioral Problems

Parents who have children with behavior problems may have a more difficult time deciding on a military school for their child. Additionally, in many cases the children rebel against the idea of attending such a school. Parents in this group often view military school as a last resort, to be used only when all other options have been exhausted. Generally, however, when a child is sent to a military academy due to poor behavior, parents note that there is an improvement in both the child’s behavior, and attitude in a relatively short time. Many parents who have made this type decision later state that while it was a difficult thing for them to do, it was the best decision they could have made for their child.

Strictly Academics

Parents considering a military education for their child based on academic performance and future college scholarship opportunities, also find that military school was a good option for their child. Children who attend military type schools often do better academically than those in traditional public schools. Also colleges are often looking for students from this type of educational background because it is well known that these students have received a well-rounded, solid education.

Discipline and Structure

Some parents believe that military schools will help their children learn discipline, responsibility, respect for authority, self control, and help them to live more orderly and structured lives. A military school can help teach children how to follow a schedule, prioritize tasks, be responsible in their day to day living, and to act respectably toward adults and others in positions of authority.

There are military schools for girls and boys. They are run with a firm hand, but generally kids are all respected and cared for properly. Get a glimpse of what some military school graduates had to say about their experience in the program. You might get a different picture in your mind.

While different military schools are run differently, and each has it’s own benefits and draw-backs, many people believe that a military education for their child is the best possible situation in order to help them succeed, and even excel in life.
