As with any neurological illness, patients and their loved ones/ friends often need outside help to deal with their situations. Epilepsy is no exception. Reasons for support groups include: - receiving encouragement from others in the same situation
- gaining comfort and feeling that you are not alone with your epilepsy
- learning new information about your disorder
- feeling accepted as you are
Epilepsy support groups range from child, teen, and adult-oriented, to groups for parents or siblings of folks with epilepsy. Children's groups focus on socializing (feeling accepted and capable with similar kids), empathizing, and educational and recreational factors. Adult groups often focus on research, fund-raising, encouragement, and socializing. Groups for parents help with parenting skills and epilepsy educational implications.
